Role details and requirements

The Witness Service provides free, independent support to any witness giving evidence in criminal courts across England and Wales, for both the prosecution and the defence.

Trained staff and volunteers help witnesses understand what to expect before, during and after a trial. They provide practical and emotional support throughout the process, enabling witnesses to feel more confident and give their best evidence.

In the Outreach role, volunteers support witnesses before their trial, on the day they give evidence, and after the trial has concluded. They offer an opportunity to discuss the experience and signpost witnesses to appropriate services for any ongoing support needs.
