Conservation Volunteer, Turner’s Wood PelsallConservation volunteers help us protect and enhance habitats for nature on our sites and reserves. Rather than working directly with animals, they support our day to day management and longer-term improvements to reserves.
Role details and requirements
Conservation volunteers help us protect and enhance habitats for nature on our sites and reserves. Rather than working directly with animals, they support our day to day management and longer-term improvements to reserves.
This is hands-on, outdoor volunteering, so might not be suitable for everyone.
Tasks vary throughout the year, but could include: building fencing, coppicing, improving paths, clearing scrub, litter picking, pond work, creating meadows, planting and propagation of native plants. Many tasks need hand tools, but we also work with or alongside mechanical powered equipment.
We will provide a hot drink and biscuits for break time (but you should bring a packed lunch if you want to eat during the session).
By joining this opportunity, you could:
• Contribute to the conservation of beautiful sites and reserves
• Learn new practical skills and experience to put on a CV
• Meet other like-minded people from the local community
• Enjoy some fresh air and exercise
• Reconnect with nature and improve your health and well-being
• Learn more about wildlife and our local green spaces
Volunteering sessions at Turner's Wood, Pelsall are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.
Session times are 10.30am-3.00pm
You don’t need to have previous conservation experience – but you should be enthusiastic about wildlife.
You should:
• be able to follow instructions and work independently as part of a wider group
• be able to understand the importance of health and safety in the environment
• be able to adhere to health and safety requirements, as instructed by volunteer leaders
• have at least a basic level of fitness, as the role is physical and practical
• have mobility to move around sites, to bend and get up and down for tasks
• be willing to work outside in all weather and in remote locations
Before starting volunteers will need to read our Volunteer Handbook and read and agree to conditions in our Volunteer Agreement.
In particular, volunteers should:
• take heed of leaders’ advice and follow all Health and Safety instructions
• wear appropriate clothing for the weather and tasks
• fill out an emergency details form and bring it each time you volunteer
• work co-operatively, and with mutual respect, alongside other volunteers and staff.
