Linking Lives Aldridge is engaging with the huge issue of loneliness and social isolation in Aldridge.
Experts agree that social isolation is the biggest threat to our ageing society and many older people fear loneliness more than lack of money or deteriorating health. We hope that you can help us achieve our aim of tackling this issue through friendship, support and social activities.
Role: Befriender (Volunteer)
Organisation: Linking Lives Aldridge
About the role:
Can you donate an hour of you time once a week or once a fortnight to provide friendship to an elderly person suffering from loneliness and social isolation?
A visit from a befriender can make a life changing difference to someone suffering from loneliness.
We will pair volunteers up with an elderly person suffering from loneliness and social isolation and we ask you to visit them on a regular basis-approximately an hour or so once a week or once a fortnight.
Where appropriate, we encourage you to do things together, this might include, going shopping, baking together, light lunches, going out for coffee or pottering in the garden. The emphasis is on doing the activity together in order to maintain independence and promote friendship. A gift of an hour of your time each week will be a life changing gift to someone who is experiencing loneliness and social isolation
Who can apply
We welcome volunteers of all ages from 18 and over. We want a range of people from different faiths, cultures, backgrounds and lifestyles so we can pair you with a suitable link friend based on interests, hobbies and background. We welcome people with disabilities, and additional needs who are able to form friendships and manage independent visits.
This project is a project of Aldridge Methodist Church but you do not have to be a practising Christian, attend church or follow any particular faith in order to volunteer. This project is for people who live in the Aldridge area. You will be expected to travel to their home for visits.
(Recruitment is subject to a DBS procedure.)
