What are your New Year’s Resolutions?
It is that time of the year when we all make some kind of resolution for the new year, usually about starting or increasing a good habit or stopping a bad habit. Mine usually involves my weight and how there may be a little to much of it. So, less eating of the bad (but so tasty) food and getting more exercise. I shall keep you posted. So far it’s going well. But we are only three days in.
For organisations I am going to suggest a resolution: get planning. I am even going to ask ‘is your business plan up to date?’. I know that for many the words ‘business plan’ are a horror. ‘It’s a waste of time,’ ‘it will just sit on the shelf’, ‘we haven’t got the time to fiddle about with that’ are some of the reactions I have had over the years.
I want to suggest that if done properly the business plan can save time, save resources and be a focus for your volunteers and staff. If it helps, take away the word business and think it as a ‘plan’.
A good business plan is a way to ask a series of questions which will prompt answers:
- Where are we now?
- What are we doing?
- Is this the best way to do it?
- What do we want to do?
- What do we have to do to get where we are going?
Answering these questions is an excellent way to identify the actions you need to stay well as an organization. Times have been hard and I think that we need to accept that they are going to be hard for a while more. A good plan helps an organization anticipate and put together a strategy for the future rather than just reacting to it. Additionally when you put together a business plan you get a lot of material for funding applications, marketing and promotion so the effort is repaid twice.
