One Walsall’s Volunteer Support, Katerina Demetriou recently attended Jane Lane School to deliver two workshops to the students on the benefits of volunteering. Little did she know it would be just as much benefit to her too.
The students were introduced to the world of volunteering and the positive impact it can have on peoples’ lives. They were separated into groups and asked to write down their volunteering experiences and what they thought volunteering was about.
Their feedback was fantastic, they had all taken time out of their lives to help at different places including; Church Fayres, Christmas Fayres, Litter Picks and even hosting Macmillan Coffee Mornings. What surprised Kat was that they didn’t realise that this was in fact volunteering and that they were already having a positive impact on their communities.
The students went through the variety of volunteering opportunities One Walsall were advertising and they were surprised to see how many different roles were available and how diverse the voluntary sector is. They were really excited at the prospect of gaining experience whilst at the same time helping to make a real difference to people’s lives.
Kat came away with a jump in her step as she had just introduced two groups of excited students into the world of volunteering. Feedback included:
‘Thank you for teaching me all about volunteering, it shows me the new opened up opportunities on volunteering as a whole’ – Hayley
‘I really want to help people in the future and because of you I have a chance’ – Aaron
