The Sheldon Trust, which also incorporates funds previously held by the Malcolm Chick Charity and the Pearson’s Holiday Fund, aims to alleviate poverty and distress within society.
To this end, the Trust provides around 15 to 25 grants twice a year to registered charities in four defined focus areas: community projects; special needs groups; youth development; and holidays for the disadvantaged.
The Sheldon Trust is administered by Pothecary Witham Weld Solicitors.
Funding amounts available
The Trustees are willing to consider applications for funding of up to £10,000, when warranted. Multi-year commitments, up to three years, can also be considered.
The average grant for Holidays for the Disadvantaged is £1,000.
Who can apply
Registered charities with an annual income of less than £1 million and free unrestricted reserves of less than six months of annual expenditure may apply.
Applications for Community Projects, Special Needs Groups, and Holiday Funding for the Disadvantaged will be considered only from charities based and operating within the West Midlands, with particular emphasis on Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Wolverhampton and Warwickshire. Holiday Funding for the Disadvantaged will also be considered from organisations from Greater London.
Applications for Youth Development projects will be considered nationally.
Funding can be used for projects, salaries, equipment, furnishings, refurbishments and running costs.
Applicants should be seeking funding to support one of the following areas:
- Community projects within the West Midlands that address identified local needs of a community nature.
- Special needs groups within the West Midlands which assist groups that are at a disadvantage in society due to age, health or learning issues.
- Youth development (nationally) which address the needs of 16-25 year olds, especially those not in education, employment or training (NEET). Applications are encouraged from programmes which encourage individual young people to expand their experiences and challenge their capacities.
- Holidays for the disadvantaged for beneficiaries from the West Midlands or Greater London.
When to apply
Applications are accepted at any time.
For Holiday Funding applications, decisions are made throughout the year. For other awards, the Trustees meet in April and October to consider around 15 to 25 applications at any one time, depending on the amount of funding available for grant making. Applications and supporting documentation must be submitted by the deadline provided by the Trust. However, applications received too late for one of the Trustees meetings will be considered at the next review.
When to apply
Please note: Deadlines are subject to change without notice. The online application process will close as soon as a sufficient number of applications have been received. Applicants are urged to check the website for updates.
