In response to Covid-19, One Walsall launched its volunteer application process via its website on Thursday 26 March. By Monday 30 March we had already received over 300 applications. Less than a fortnight later, nearly 600 applications had been received.
We now have around 650 volunteers signed up and have been overwhelmed by the generosity of spirit people are showing during this most difficult of times; people are showing a willingness to help wherever possible.
Over 43% of volunteers have been placed within relevant roles and we fully appreciate how frustrating it is for people who have signed up and are eager to help but, to date, have not been allocated a role. We appreciate everyone’s patience with this and are placing people as soon as requests for support are received from both the community and statutory sectors.
One Walsall is also looking to the future and a world beyond the current crisis. We will be looking at ways we can galvanise this current enthusiasm to volunteer. We are committed to the fact that volunteering is not only important during a crisis but is essential for community resilience every day, every year.
One Walsall would like to take this opportunity to recognise the invaluable contribution everyone volunteering is making – your support really does make a difference – thank you! We’ll all be clapping for you this Thursday together with recognising NHS staff.
